Long-Term Care Homes In Whitby
Long-term care homes provide much more care than retirement homes, including:
- help with most or all daily activities
- access to 24-hour nursing and personal care
Long-term care homes in Ontario are regulated and funded by the government and must have a licence or minister’s approval to operate.
Long-term care licences are issued to:
- not-for-profit homes, such as homes run by a charity
- homes run by for-profit companies
Minister’s Approvals are issued to:
- municipally-run and First Nations homes (as defined in the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021)
Accommodation charges are the same at all homes, regardless of the type, but fees for optional services will vary.
Retirement Homes In Whitby

What does OHIP cover? All medically necessary physician visits for assessment and treatment of residents in long-term care facilities are covered by OHIP. In addition, OHIP also covers case conferences which are held for discussing and directing the management of an individual patient.
Retirement homes do not receive government funding. Residents of retirement homes pay for the full cost of their accommodation and any care services they purchase from the home. Retirement homes decide the type of care services they will provide.
Retirement homes are regulated by the Retirement Homes Regulatory Authority in accordance with the Retirement Homes Act. Other legislation that set standards for retirement homes include the Residential Tenancies Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Ontario Fire Protection Act, the Personal Health Information Protection Act and College of Nurses standards.
